Kalumpit is one neglected species with a potential for the fruit preserve, candy or even local wine industry. With its taste a mixture of sweetness and some sourness, it brings back memories of my childhood in Mindoro when we used to exchange some papers for a few pieces of the ripe fruit. Thirty five years after , we were able to grow lots in the nursery of the Provincial Government of Camarines Sur where I work as a forester.
In few discussions that I managed to attend or handle regarding forest conservation, one of the most common questions asked by the local communities is what are the native tree species. Since there are about 3,500 of them and enumerating all of them will be beyond my humble capability, my usual answer is to refer them to Philippine geography. Geography and forestry? Of course . If we take a look at some of the old towns ( or even barangays) we can see that a lot of them were named after native species of plants or trees. We have Calumpit in Bulacan, Antipolo in Rizal, Bangkal in Makati, Talisay in Cebu to name a few. I have yet to come across written documents about a tree named " kalap". Accordingly, the name Calapan, a town ( now a city) in Mindoro Oriental was named after that tree which used to grow in the swamplands. Alangilan in Batangas is also one.
